Nestled in the rugged terrain of Arizona's Tonto National Forest, the town of Superior holds stories etched into its landscape. From the silent graves of pioneers to the preserved artifacts of a bygone era, Superior offers a journey through time for history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.

The Historic Pinal Cemetery: A Testament to Frontier Life
Just west of Superior lies the Historic Pinal Cemetery, a solemn reminder of the town's origins during the silver mining boom of the late 19th century. Established in 1878, this cemetery served the residents of Pinal City, a once-thriving mining town that has since faded into obscurity.

Among the 43 identified graves is a memorial to Celia Ann "Mattie" Blaylock Earp, the common-law wife of famed lawman Wyatt Earp. Mattie's life ended tragically in 1888 due to a laudanum overdose, and while her exact burial spot remains unknown, a cenotaph honors her memory at the cemetery's entrance .

Visitors to the cemetery will find simple rock outlines marking many graves, with few bearing legible inscriptions. The site, administered by the Tonto National Forest, is protected under the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979, ensuring its preservation for future generations .

Bob Jones Museum: Preserving Superior's Heritage
In the heart of Superior stands the Bob Jones Museum, housed in the former residence of Robert Taylor "Bob" Jones, Arizona's sixth governor. The museum offers a glimpse into the town's rich history, showcasing artifacts from its mining days, rock and mineral specimens, photographs, and personal belongings of early residents along with a wealth of stories from the friendly museum docents.

Jones, who served as governor from 1939 to 1941, was instrumental in the development of Superior. His home-turned-museum provides context to the town's evolution and the lives of those who shaped it.
The museum is generally open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 12-3pm.
