As the month of May approaches, people around the world are gearing up to celebrate Cinco de Mayo - a holiday that commemorates the Mexican army's victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. But for many Americans, Cinco de Mayo has become a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage that lasts throughout the entire month of May. And in the town of Superior, Arizona, there are plenty of ways to join in the festivities.
Here are just a few ideas for celebrating Mexican heritage in Superior this May:
Attend a Cultural Event
Throughout the month of May, you're likely to find a variety of cultural events taking place in and around Superior. Look for events that feature traditional Mexican music, dance, and food, or that showcase Mexican art, history, and culture. The Barmacy on Main Street is hosting a weekend fiesta that will feature dance, live music, great drinks and a roaring good time.
Explore Local Mexican Cuisine
Superior is home to a variety of Mexican restaurants, a bakery (panadería) and a tortilleria (at Los Hermanos Restaurant) each with their own unique take on traditional Mexican cuisine. Take some time to explore the local dining scene, trying new dishes and getting to know the flavors and ingredients that make Mexican food so special.
Some local favorites are La Plaza Deli and Grill, Juan's Central Bakery, Jalepeños, Buckboard City Cafe & Saloon, Los Hermanos and Felicia's Ice Cream Shop, which offers more than just ice cream!
Visit a Local Shop (Mercado)
If you're looking for unique, handmade crafts and goods, look no further than Superior's Main Street. These boutique shops are filled with artisanal goods, from handmade pottery and textiles to papier mâché crafts and paintings showcasing Mexican culture.
Learn a Traditional Dance
If you're lucky enough to catch a performance by the Superior Dance Company, which if you head to Besich Park on Saturday May 6th at 2:30pm you will! You will be dazzled by the color and movement of their folklorico costumes and fancy footwork. Dance has always played an important role in Mexican culture, and there are many traditional dances that have been passed down through generations. Take a class, attend a workshop or even look it up on YouTube to learn the steps to a traditional Mexican dance.
Visit Superior's Mexican Inspired Murals
Superior's mural count is growing and you will be sure to find a number of murals depicting Mexican culture and heritage. Art 145 on Main Street recently put together a mural map that takes you on a self-guided tour to all the different murals and galleries around town.
